General Fire Safety: Electrical Safety

We live and work in a world that is kept very safe from fire. The electricity that we use every day is delivered to us safely and efficiently. The electrical appliances and devices we use are tested and evaluated to operate safely. Employees and employers through awareness and simple care can increase electrical fire safety in the office and technical settings.
When at work, please consider the following;
- Be aware of accidentally pinching or crushing the electrical cord of appliances by pushing the appliance up against a wall. Pinching or crushing an appliance cord will create a short in the electrical device and start a fire.
- Keep an eye out for damaged or overloaded outlets, cords or cables
- Keep in mind that Duke safety policy does not allow use of extension cords, nor portable heaters, air fryers, or toaster ovens in any of its buildings
- When heating or cooking food for yourself or a patient, never leave the item unattended
- Follow the manufacturer’s instruction for use when operating something electrical
- Refrigerators, coffee makers, and microwaves should be plugged directly into an electrical outlet
